Short description

Kestrel 5500 is a portable weather station in a pocket-sized format. It measures 14 weather parameters, logs data, and can work in tandem with a smartphone. Suitable for use in conditions where accurate knowledge of weather conditions is critical — from construction sites to mountain slopes.

You can get all the information by phone

The Kestrel 5500 is designed as a universal compact weather instrument for those who need to accurately assess current environmental conditions and have the ability to analyze their changes over time. At its core is the reliable Kestrel 5 Series measurement platform, which inherited the accuracy and stability of readings from the previous generation (Kestrel 4000), but received a larger and more contrast-rich display, an intuitive menu, and improved housing ergonomics. Airflow speed is measured by a replaceable impeller, which the user can replace independently if necessary without service center assistance. The external temperature and humidity sensor is positioned outside the housing, reducing the influence of heat from the hands and instrument body on measurement accuracy and enabling more reliable data on air temperature, dew point, and wet bulb temperature. A separate barometric sensor is responsible for measuring atmospheric and absolute pressure, as well as calculating barometric and density altitude. All readings can be viewed on the screen in real time and saved: the built-in memory holds up to 10,000 time-stamped records, and data can be viewed as graphs directly on the instrument display or exported to a computer (Windows/Mac) via cable, or, with the LiNK option, via Bluetooth — to a smartphone or tablet. This makes the Kestrel 5500 convenient not only for one-time measurements, but also for long-term condition monitoring — for example, during fieldwork, expeditions, or microclimate control at open sites. The instrument housing is built to IP67/NEMA-6 protection standards and has passed MIL-STD-810G impact resistance testing, making the Kestrel 5500 resistant to drops, dust, and moisture, and allowing it to be used in the most demanding operating conditions.

Kestrel 5500 purpose

  • Professional on-site weather monitoring. The instrument provides current weather condition data at construction, agricultural, and industrial sites — where weather directly affects safety and technological processes.
  • Work in challenging field conditions. Thanks to its protected housing and compact size, the instrument is used by firefighters, rescue personnel, military, and researchers in conditions where stationary equipment is impractical.
  • Outdoor recreation and sports. The instrument is in demand in sailing, aviation, hunting, shooting, and other activities where knowledge of wind speed and direction, as well as overall weather conditions, is important.

Kestrel 5500 advantages

  • Everything you need in one device. The Kestrel 5500 replaces several instruments at once: anemometer, thermometer, hygrometer, and barometer. All 14 parameters are measured by a single compact device that fits in a pocket.
  • Reliability in any conditions. The instrument is protected against water (submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes), dust, and mechanical impacts. It is designed for use where conventional equipment may fail.
  • Convenient data transfer and storage. The device saves over 10,000 measurements and allows them to be transferred to a smartphone or computer without manual entry. This is convenient for reporting and subsequent analysis.

  • Measured parameters: wind speed and direction, headwind/tailwind and crosswind, air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, dew point, wet bulb temperature, wind chill, heat index, barometric and density altitude (up to 14 parameters total)
  • Wind speed range: 0.6 — 40.0 m/s (operating up to 60.0 m/s)
  • Wind direction range: 0 — 360° (built-in compass)
  • Temperature measurement range: from −29 to +70 °C
  • Humidity range: 5 — 95% (operating range 0 — 100%)
  • Pressure range: 750 — 1,100 hPa
  • Dust and moisture protection rating: IP67 (submersion up to 1 m / 30 min)
  • Impact resistance: MIL-STD-810G
  • Display: large high-resolution high-contrast graphical LCD, backlight (white / red in NV mode)
  • Power supply: AA battery (lithium), ~400 hours
  • Dimensions and weight: 12.2 × 4.2 × 1.8 cm, ~65–70 g (instrument without case)
  • Memory: up to 10,000 records with graphing
